Sciatica Treatment in Live Oak, FL

Find Relief from Sciatic Nerve Pain

Sciatica can make simple activities feel impossible. The sharp, burning, or electric pain that shoots from your lower back into your buttock and down your leg can make it hard to sit, stand, walk, or sleep. Some people also feel numbness, tingling, or weakness that makes everyday tasks a challenge.

At North Florida Chiropractic Center, we help patients in Live Oak and Suwannee County find the source of their sciatic pain. Dr. Michael Wood uses gentle, non-surgical care to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve and help you move comfortably again.

Understanding Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve in the body. It begins as several nerve roots in the lower spine, runs through the buttock, and travels down the back of each leg to the foot. Sciatica is not a condition on its own. It is a set of symptoms that happens when something irritates or compresses this nerve along its path.

Sciatica usually affects only one side of the body. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain that radiates from the lower back or buttock down the leg
  • Sharp, burning, or shooting pain
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
  • Weakness in the leg or foot
  • Pain that worsens when sitting, bending, coughing, or sneezing

Finding what is irritating the nerve is the key to lasting relief. Below are the most common causes we see.

Herniated and Bulging Discs

A herniated or bulging disc in the lower back is the most common cause of sciatica. When the soft center of a spinal disc pushes outward, it can press directly on the nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve. This pressure and the inflammation that comes with it can send pain, numbness, and tingling down the leg. Disc problems often develop from lifting, twisting, sitting for long periods, or gradual wear over time.

Spinal Misalignments

When vertebrae in the lower back or pelvis shift out of position or stop moving properly, they can irritate nearby nerve roots and the muscles around them. Misalignments may develop after a fall, accident, or strain, or slowly from poor posture and repetitive movements. Restoring proper motion to these joints can help take pressure off the irritated nerve.

Spinal Stenosis and Degeneration

As we age, the spaces where nerves exit the spine can narrow. Discs may lose height, joints may thicken, and bone spurs may form. This narrowing, called spinal stenosis, can crowd the nerve roots and cause sciatica symptoms. Pain from stenosis often gets worse with standing or walking and improves when sitting or bending forward.

Piriformis Syndrome

The piriformis is a small muscle deep in the buttock that sits close to the sciatic nerve. When this muscle becomes tight, inflamed, or goes into spasm, it can squeeze the nerve and cause pain that feels very similar to disc-related sciatica. It is common in runners, people who sit for long hours, and those with hip or pelvic imbalances.

Pregnancy and Other Factors

During pregnancy, added weight, a shifting center of gravity, and changes in the pelvis can place extra pressure on the lower back and sciatic nerve. Other factors that may raise your risk include extra body weight, jobs that involve heavy lifting or long periods of sitting, and a lack of core strength.

When to Seek Emergency Care

Most sciatica improves with conservative care, but some symptoms need immediate medical attention. Go to the emergency room right away if you have loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or sudden, severe weakness in one or both legs.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

Chiropractic care focuses on finding and relieving the source of pressure on the sciatic nerve. Your first visit includes a detailed consultation and a thorough examination of your spine, pelvis, and nerve function. This helps Dr. Wood identify the cause of your symptoms and recommend the right care.

Treatment may include gentle adjustments to the lower back and pelvis, along with non-surgical spinal decompression to ease disc pressure. Therapies such as K-Laser therapy, electrical muscle stimulation, and therapeutic ultrasound may also help calm inflammation and relax tight muscles. Dr. Wood may recommend simple stretches and posture tips to support your recovery at home. The goal is to relieve pain, restore movement, and help you avoid surgery whenever possible.
