Disc Bulges and Herniations
Between each vertebra sits a soft, cushioning disc that absorbs shock and allows your spine to move. When a disc is damaged, its gel-like center can bulge outward or push through the tougher outer layer.
Some people with disc problems feel very little pain, while others experience severe symptoms. It depends on where the damage is and whether the disc presses on a nearby nerve. When a nerve becomes irritated, you may notice:
- Sharp, shooting, or burning pain
- Pain that travels into the buttocks or legs
- Numbness or tingling in the legs or feet
- Weakness in the lower body
- Difficulty sitting, standing, or walking for long periods
A thorough exam helps determine the extent of the injury. For many disc patients, care may include gentle adjustments and non-surgical spinal decompression.
